Alvor

Alvor, one of the most popular resorts on the Algarve is less than an hour’s drive from Faro airport. A busy vacation destination, Alvor has still managed to keep a great sense of old world charm with it’s quaint white washed fishing village and an amazing beach stretching across 4.5miles of golden sand. Not as commercialised as other neighboring resorts, there is still an excellent selection of shops, restaurants, cafes, bars, markets and craft shops in the area. Many of the villas are spacious and offer private pools, air conditioning and beautifully decorated interiors in traditional décor. The town has a marvelous Harbour with a Marina area. The local cuisine is heavily influenced by the sea with all of the local restaurants offering traditional seafood dishes, a selection of European food and excellent wines.

For larger towns, nearby are Portimao and Lagoa for a greater selection and even greater prices.

Theme Parks & Excursions

The Algarve offers many theme parks and tourist attractions that can be booked locally with bus connections to neighboring resorts. Two of the main parks in the Alvor area are Slide & Splash: a water park full of adrenaline pumping rollercoasters, rides, water tunnels, slides and an excellent kiddie’s area. A ride on the infamous Kamikaze and Bonsai rides are a must. Dolphin Seafaris: take a boat trip out into the deep blue oceans to catch a glimpse of some amazing dolphins, whales, sharks and even orcas at times. These are a fun day out with many of the trips offering food, drink and entertainment on board. Jeep Safari’s and Bus Tours run daily to explore the countryside inland offering meals and some adventure along the way.

Golf

Many golf enthusiasts make their way to these sandy shores where there are several excellent courses in the area. Alto Golf, an 18 hole course that challenges even the best of players is located just outside Portimao. Penina Resort is also known as the grandfather of all golf courses in the Algarve is an 18 hole course specifically designed with many water hazards and shrubbery to catch to catch even the most skilled player.

Eating Out in Alvor

Eating our in Alvor is a diner’s delight. There is a good selection of European, Indian and Chinese restaurants but do try some local dishes of Chicken or Sardine Piri-Piri, (spicy), Fresh Tuna, Grilled Prawns, Goats cheese, chargrilled meats and delicious salads. Food is fresh with even the most basic dish tantalizing your taste buds.
