Brittany Travel Highlights
Rennes
Rennes, the capital of Brittany, is very much a cosmopolitan town. With its museums, arts centers and many traditional festivals throughout the year, you will also find modern shopping areas, universities and a prestigious medical college and some great nightlife making Rennes a lively destination offering a wide variety of attractions. A fire destroyed most of the original medieval city back in 1720. Today, Rennes stands tall surrounded by influences of 18th century architecture. In parts of the town centre, you can still see the remains of buildings that depict its medieval heritage.
Saint-Malo
Originally built as an island, this monastic settlement of St Malmo, dating back to the 6th century, is now joined to the mainland and enjoys the title of the most visited attraction in Brittany. Visitors can take the ferry crossing out to this walled city and enjoy the ancient surroundings of the town and walk along the ramparts and many sandy beaches on offer.
Quimper
Situated in the mid region of Brittany, Quimper is sheltered by the rivers Steir and Odet and is famous for its beautiful faience ceramics which are hand crafted by skilled local craftsmen dating back to the 17th century. In the town centre stands the Gothic cathedral of Saint Corentin which is famous for its outstanding stained glass windows. For art lovers, the fine arts museum of “Musee des Beaux Arts” is home to many famous pieces from the masters Picasso and Rubens.
