Lascaux II Caves at Montignac
Located 30km from Sarlat, the caves of Lascaux are renowned world wide for their prehistoric carvings. This Paleolithic sanctuary dates back to 15000 BC. The original cave was found by some teenagers searching for their dog in 1940. Following a massive interest in the cave, it was closed in 1963 as it is said that the drawings were being affected by the breath of the thousands of visitors passing through each year. A second cave was opened just 200m away in 1978 and is an exact replica of the original cave.
Marqueyssac Gardens
Located in the centre of the Dordogne area, the Marqueyssac Gardens are a spectacular sight to behold and the most popular gardens in the region. Also called the Overhanging Gardens of Marqueyssac, the garden covers 6km of hand carved boxwoods in some amazing shapes and sizes. The paths are laid out in 3 different routes falling down to the Belvedere, a balcony with stunning views over the Dordogne valley. Included in the gardens you will find a fabulous chateau with an extensive children’s playground and picnic area. Every Thursday evening during the summer, visitors can enjoy the gardens as they light up by candlelight with musicians playing on the lawns. This is truly a wonderful experience.
