The Eiffel Tower
Built in 1889, The Eiffel tower stands proud as the tallest structure in Paris and is the most visited “paid “monument in the world. Designed by and named after its creator Gustave Eiffel this historical structure is made totally from iron. Tourists can walk the 677 steps to the 2nd level viewing balcony and then take a lift to the 3rd level which is the highest viewing balcony on the tower. At several stages you can see video footage of many historical events that took place at the tower over the years. Being France’s most famous landmark, The Eiffel Tower hosts many events and fireworks displays during the year to mark dates in French history.
The Louvre
Located in the 1st arrondissement in the centre of Paris, the Louvre is one of the most visited and largest museums in the world. It first opened its doors in 1789 and at any one time there are approx. 35,000 pieces of art on display. Divided into different sections, you could easily spend the day in just one area of the museum. The famous painting of the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vince hangs in one of the main galleries since the end of the French Revolution. In 1989, a new addition of the marvellous glass Pyramid was built and is now used as the main entrance to the Louvre. One of the most beautiful walks in Paris starts at The Louvre continues through the Gardens of Toulliers, Concorde Place and up the Champs-Elysées to end at the Arc de Triomphe.
Le Château de Versailles
Only 20km from Paris, the Château de Versailles, built for Louis XIV, is designed in the traditional style of French Baroque architecture. Renowned as the most famous in the world, the gardens are said to contain a vast array of interesting outdoor sculptures, the biggest and most beautiful fountains in the world, lakes of all shapes and sizes, parterres, an orangey, and amazingly beautiful walkways through the most magnificently sculptured trees & shrubbery. Guided tours are available all year in the Château filled with art, historical memorabilia and an extravagant interior. There is an excellent rail & bus system from Paris to Versailles.
