Holiday Homes Westmeath

Westmeath is one of Ireland smallest counties and also known as the county of Lakes. It is the Gate Way to Galway from the Capital and well worth a stop to take a view at the lakes of Lough Ennell, Lough Ree , Lough Owel. As with all lakes you have a vast amounts of fishing and our visiting fisherman like nothing more then staying at the beautiful Self-catering units at on the lake side at Westmeath Holiday homes, Loughstown near Delvin just 10 miles from Mullingar.

A great saying locally is” beef to the heels like the Mullingar Heifer” which refers to the great Agricultural Lands in this county and the rearing of quality beef. Mullingar also host one of Irelands top Greyhound Tracks so there is lots to see and do. Mullingar itself has on of the most striking Catherdrals with its twin spires tower towering 140 feet into the landscape.

Apart from the attractions of fishing, another great attraction in this county are Golf Courses stretching from Delvin, where the self catering holiday homes, Westmeath Holiday Village , are located. Another great course is located in Athlone, where you have the famous Glassan Golf course and holiday homes. Also very close is the K-Club, home to the famous Ryder Cup in 2006. As you travel from Mullingar to Athlone you can spend a day at the Famous Kilbeggan Race course.

Athlone is the capital town in the county and has an array of shops restaurants and café’s to choose from, The Wine Port Lodge is very close to our holiday homes at Glassan Mews. Athlone is of course also famous for it’s cruising as the Shannon River runs through the town.

Self Catering Westmeath - Travel Highlights

Christmas in Westmeath at Glendeer Open Farm

Take a break at Glendeer Open Farm with over 50 species of animals & birds, play area & picnic area. Glendeer Open Farm is transformed into Ireland’s Lapland for the month of December with Santa, live deer, "Dancer" & "Prancer" as special guests at the farm, live crib, snow scene and lots more.

Athlone Castle

The Castle is now a focal point for tourism and visitors and it features exhibitions and audio visual presentations. The Siege of Athlone Athlone story is told on the large screen with excellent use of contemporary engravings, portraits and prints.

Fore Abbey

Fore Abbey is effectively the last trace of the once powerful Benedictine order in Ireland, investing the site with historical importance. The size and location of the ruins, however, will be more important to most visitors. Both are impressive and make for an ideal photo opportunity. Nearby outbuildings, further churches and Fore village (once a fortified town) add to the attraction.

Tullynally Castle and Gardens

The original 17th century fortified house was remodelled first as a comfortable Georgian mansion, then as a huge gothic castle. The interiors, part Georgian, part Gothic revival, have a fine collection of furniture and pictures. It is still lived in as a family home, now probably one of the largest in Ireland . The guided tours also take in the splendid Victorian kitchens and laundries, complete with all their equipment.
