House Overview
Croan Cottages are traditional, very comfortable homes ideal for relaxing holiday escapes in the grounds of 18th century Croan House adjoining 2000 acres of woodland. The location in the South East makes Croan Cottages an ideal base for family breaks with a range of historic sites to explore nearby.
Locally available activities include Karting, Skateboarding, Horseriding, Angling, Walking and Canoeing.
The proximity to the Waterford coast provides easy access to beaches. Croanýs walled garden and paddocks support an organic smallholding with rare and friendly breeds of pigs, chickens, ducks, geese and goats providing fresh produce.
Croan Cottages are set in a landscaped courtyard. Boules, croquet and a games area are provided for guests.
Croan Cottages are adjacent to the Castle Morres estate which is now a Forest Park of almost 2,000 acres. Both conifer and native broadleaf species can be found with some specimen trees dating back to the original estate gardens.
A driven pheasant shoot takes place from November to January each year. A myriad of tracks through the woodlands offer an endless variety of walks for all abilities.
Croan Cottages are in County Kilkenny and are close to Kilkenny city, the craft capital of Ireland. The cottages are on one of Kilkenyýs signposted driving routes and are close to a number of important and interesting heritage sites including:
Knocktopher Abbey (4.5 km)
Kilree Monastic Site (4 km)
The Historic Village of Kells (6km)
Kells Priory (6km)
Burnchurch Castle (10km)
Jerpoint Abbey
Outstanding example of a Cistercian Monastery founded in the late 12th century with a magnificently sculptured cloister arcade.
Mount Juliet
Magnificent 1500 acre walled country estate, formerly the home of the McCalmont family overlooking the River Nore. Currently a 5 star hotel, international championship golf course, equestrian centre and gardens.
Kilfane Glen and Waterfall
1790s Romantic Era Gardens with impressive Waterfall and Cottage Orný with walks laid out along gravel paths and modern sculptures.
Woodstock House and Gardens
Built in the 18th century, the house was destroyed by fire in 1922. The recently restored gardens contain many champion trees, considered to be the finest of their species in Europe and include formal pleasure and walled gardens, a Monkey Puzzle Walk, an impressive Noble Fir Avenue, a grotto, a dovecote containing a Camera Obscura and Tea Shop. Open year round.
Electricity: Meter read, payable on departure - 30 cent per unit.
Leisure activities:
Fully equipped for comfort and convenience, each cottage has an open fire and a private patio for BBQs and al fresco dining. Cots, high chairs and stairgates are available. Evening meals and packed lunches can also be provided.
Croan has a 1 acre walled garden which is being restored to its former glory by the owners.
