House Overview

Just five km south of the beautiful medieval city of Kilkenny you will find the unique four star development of Wallslough Village.

This quaint thatched cottage village consists of two carefully renovated pre-famine stone cottages and six thatched cottages in an idyllic, tranquil and rural setting with wonderful views of the Kilkenny countryside. Wallslough also has its very own beautiful natural lake with free coarse fishing for guests and an indoor sports arena with 3 synthetic grass surface pitches, ideal for 5 or 6-a-side soccer.

There are 8 cottages on site including:
6 thatched cottages with 3 bedrooms, each cottage sleeps 6 people. 2 meticulously renovated pre-famine dwellings also with 3 bedrooms, each sleeping 7 people

The cottages are ideal for family holidays with no shortage of family activities available in Kilkenny city and county. Accommodating up to 50 people at any one time they are also ideally suited to large groups such as family reunions, wedding parties, golfers, anglers, soccer players and corporate groups. The cottages are available all year round for full weeks, part weeks, mid week and weekend breaks.

In tune with their traditional external appearance the cottages are traditionally decorated and furnished inside with hardwood floors throughout, beams, handmade pine furniture and open fires. They are also fully equipped with modern conveniences including dishwasher, washer/dryer, oven and microwave. The cottages are fully centrally heated and they also have an open fire, laid and just waiting to be lit. All the cottages have a bath and showers. All bedding and linen are supplied free of charge. Two of the houses are fully wheelchair accessible.

Outside the cottages there are flower beds and grassy areas, with picnic tables to sit outside during the summer.

Please note that a deposit of of 100 euro per cottage is payable on arrival. Electricity and oil are taken by meter reading on arrival and again on departure and is an extra charge which can either taken from the security deposit or paid separate.

Angling: Wallslough Village has its very own beautiful natural lake set in a raised depression in the landscape (known as a perched lake because it is higher than the surrounding countryside). The lake is stocked with coarse fish, the banks of the lake are covered with wild flowers and the lake itself attracts a myriad of wild birds including resident coots, moorhens, families of various breeds of ducks and frequent visits from swans and herons. This is a peaceful and beautiful haven where you can admire the wildlife or do some angling. Angling is free of charge to guests of Wallslough Village.

Indoor soccer: Wallslough Village has an indoor sports arena on site with 3 artificial surface pitches (each 30m x 20m). The pitches are ideal for 5 or 6-a-side soccer and they are available for a small charge to guests of Wallslough Village self-catering cottages. They provide perfect entertainment for parties, family reunions, in fact any event at all and they are suitable for all abilities. So, whatever the Irish weather brings there is always something to do at Wallslough Village!

Tourist attractions: The beautiful Medieval city of Kilkenny is just 3 miles from Wallslough Village and there is no shortage of tourist attractions. In the city itself there is Kilkenny Castle and park; a 12th century castle and National Heritage site, St Canice’s Cathedral (1285) and round tower, Rothe House Museum; a restored Tudor merchant’s house and garden and the Black Abbey founded in 1255 and one of Ireland’s oldest churches. Outside the city is Duiske Abbey (1204) in Graiguenamanagh, Dunmore limestone cave, the Discovery Park in Castlecomer with walks, angling lakes, Footprints in the Coal interactive mining museum and crafts village, Jerpoint Abbey; the finest Cistercian monastic ruins in Ireland, Reptile Village, Kells Priory; Augustinian priory ruins, Woodstock gardens; 50 acres complete with arboretum and Monkey Puzzle walk and Kilfane Glen and waterfall; romantic woodland garden dating back to 1790.

Sports: As well as facilities at Wallslough Village (the indoor sports arena ideal for 5 or 6-a-side soccer and the coarse angling lake), there is a wide range of sporting activities locally with something to suit everyone. There is a ten-pin bowling alley, The Watershed (a new leisure centre, opened in 2008 with 3 swimming pools, gym and sauna), an equestrian centre offering cross-country pony trekking, canoeing, paintball, kart racing and horseracing. For the keen angler Kilkenny has two rivers; the Suir and the Nore and lessons can be arranged with local anglers. For the golfers there are a number of golf courses including Mount Juliet; a par 72 course designed by Jack Nicklaus, a golf driving range and a pitch and putt course. For anyone into walking there are several walks within a short driving distance including Mount Leinster, Slievenamon and a walking route along the river Nore.

Arts & Crafts : Kilkenny is renowned throughout Ireland for its arts and crafts. There is a craft trail that takes you around the county visiting local crafts people at work including Jerpoint glass hand glass blowers, Chesneau hand made leather bags, Nicholas Mosse spongeware pottery and Moth to a Flame hand made candles. Kilkenny city is also home to the National Crafts Centre; the national showcase for contemporary Irish crafts and the Kilkenny Castle is home to the Butler Art Gallery for modern art.

Food & Drink: With almost 80 pubs in Kilkenny there is no shortage of watering holes. Many have both traditional Irish and modern live music sessions. There are a wide variety of restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets available in the city from Irish to Indian and everything in between.

Shopping: Kilkenny is a great place for anyone who enjoys shopping with a wide variety of local unique shops as well as national and international shops. Kilkenny’s High Street, with its traditional, brightly painted shop fronts, is where it all happens and is full of atmosphere. For a more contemporary feel the new MacDonagh Junction (a converted workhouse and still retaining the original stonework) is a modern, covered shopping centre with a central square packed with continental style cafes.
