County Louth has a rich medieval past. Drogheda, on the River Boyne has many fascinating buildings like St. Laurence’s Gate and Martello Tower. The relics of St. Oliver Plunkett, martyred in 1681, are preserved in St. Peter’s Church. Nearby are the monastic sites of Mellifont and Monasterboice.
A fine 13th century tower house dominates the main street of Ardee and in Dundalk, there is the Church of St. Nicholas. The County Museum in Dundalk is one of the finest in the country. The breathtaking Cooley peninsula has marked walking routes, bathing, boating and sea angling.

Old Mellifont Abbey
Old Mellifont Abbey was Ireland's first Cistercian Monastery. Its foundation marked the introduction into Ireland of the European monastic way of life. Its most unusual feature is the octagonal lavabo from the 12th century. The visitor centre houses an interesting exhibition, which includes fragments of carved stone masonry, recovered from the Abbey during excavation.
